The Bible is replete with situations where God asked His followers to raise worship banners as a way of honouring Him. A particularly good example can be found in the thirteenth chapter of the book of Isaiah. This is not the only situation where these decorated bits of cloth have been used; they also featured in many medieval wars.

These emblems are still used in more contemporary situations. Churches still use them both in and outside their buildings. However, they use these in a different way from their medieval counterparts. While the latter used them once in a while, modern worshippers have made these a consistent part of their services and outreaches. These may be displayed on walls, pillars or other places associated with the worship of God.

Anyone who has ever been to a May Day parade in the United Kingdom will not have missed the incredible display of pennants. These tend to be red in color, perhaps as a reflection of how worker’s blood has been spilled over the years as they fought for their rights. These also show the trade union’s perspective of the future, with increasing use of technology, a reduction in working hours and increasing leisure time being popular themes.

Anyone who has ever attended a soccer match, or any other sports event will not have missed the pennants that adorn the stadium or similar venues. Fans go to great lengths to support their teams; they will make large emblems showing the name, logo and motto of their favorite teams. The National Football Club of Uruguay is reputed to have the largest one in the world; it is said to be fifty metres wide, and six hundred long. The massive pennant is said to be capable of covering three grandstands.

Advertising companies are probably the biggest users and beneficiaries of pennants. These allow them to reach many consumers at the minimum of cost. For this reason, they can be found virtually everywhere; on stadium walls, hanging from branches, being pulled by helicopters, on the walls of skyscrapers, next to busy highways among other locations. There are those who complain about that ubiquity, and look at them as form of visual pollution.

One of the most common uses for these emblems is to exclusively display a coats of arms. This is done without the coronet, crest, mantle, motto and other elements that generally make up these insignias. These can be rectangular or square. These can be seen in many military parades around the world, or any other occasion of national importance.

These pennants are made of various materials. Large format ones, such as those used for billboards use a plastic called vinyl. This material is hard, weather resistant and able to accept a wide range of dyes and colors. It can be single or double sided. Very large ones, such as those that are found on the sides of buildings are printed on a mesh like material which allows wind to pass through.

Silk remains a popular choice for many individuals and organizations who want an attractive and durable material to make worship banners from. It is extremely old, with the Chinese being reported to have used it at least five thousand years ago. The material is made from silkworms.
